How Do You Choose The Best Bird For You?

Best Pet Bird

Thinking of getting a new feathery companion and family? Well, birds are beautiful and honestly, everyone of them is unique in their own way. However, choosing a pet bird requires you to go through certain amount of factors and traits that will make your choice a healthy one. Before adopting your new family, you have to learn about the birds, the place where you can keep them and especially if your environment is the right kind for your pet bird. Do not worry at all, as this blog has got you all covered!

The first question that you should ask yourself before adopting a feathery friend is, how much time can you commit to your new family member? Birds are fun to have around, playful and very social. But to make them comfortable in the new surrounding requires a lot of patience and dedication. It might take days, weeks or even months to make them realize that you aren’t harmful. However, this is just not the end! Many pet birds require a lot of attention or they might undergo boredom and depression. You have to give them time out of their natural habitat so that they can interact and in case you fail to do so, it will make your pet frustrated. So how can you solve this problem? The answer is simple: managing your daily schedule. Put aside some specific hours to play with your bird and pamper them with all the attention they need. Buy small, chewy toys that can keep them busy and help them learn different tricks and words. The more committed you are to your feathery friend, the better companion it will be. You should also realize this factor, that birds have a different life span. Some birds can live upto 100 years and some 40. One must keep this in their mind, that passing on pet birds to the next generation is not at all unusual, but one must prepare their next kin for the takeover!

Cleanliness is required in every aspect of life. It is the same when it comes to taking care of pet birds. You cannot think of this task as a tiresome chore since it needs to be done on regular basis. Clean the toys, bowls and other accessory stuff of your chirpy friend weekly, so that they stay healthy and hygienic. The food should be changed on daily basis and the water too.

Ever wondered what kind of attention a bird requires? It’s funny, because most pet birds behave like humans. They demand the same amount of love and attention just like a grown up adult. Some chirpy friends tend to be close to only one specific person and some might share their love equally with all family members. Here’s a twisted truth; do not think that you are that specific one that your pet loves just because you feed them! Like dogs, your lil friends don’t settle for sharing attachments with the person who feeds them. It can vary according to them and might even be the person who’s least interactive with your pet. In other cases birdies prefer minimal handling and likes to be left in their own natural habitat. This decision is solely upto you that how friendly you want your pet to be. You can tame them and get free, soft cuddles or rather leave them in their own natural habitat.

Planning to get a chirpy friend, and you think your life will be less messy? Completely wrong! Birds tend to be messy and loud. Be prepared for some boom-box shrills that can be heard even from the end of the street! Even potty-trained birds tend to do mistakes. Birds like budgies, cockatiels keep whistling and chats all the time. Macaws tend to be louder and can disrupt your office meetings! If you want a quiet bird, you can choose canaries and finches. No matter what, living with your feathery friend will always seem like a two-year old roommate!

Another question that new bird lovers often have is, is it better to buy an old bird or a younger one? Well, both have their own pros and cons. Younger birds are easy to tame and train. They learn faster and get attached more to the family members. You can keep a check on their personality from young age which will help you in future. However, feeding younger birds is a perilous job. As much as easy it sounds, at times, younger ones face difficulty in consuming food. These are the times when you have to come forward and give them hand-feeding which is extremely delicate and difficult.

The feeding problem is avoided in the older ones. The older feathery friends can feed themselves and it won’t be a problem for you. However, it might take a lot of time for the older ones to get along with you, especially if they came from a different family. Do not lose hope. Bonding takes a lot of time, but once it’s done, you can cuddle with your older ones in the same way!

Choosing a pet bird can be difficult but always remember to choose with your head and not heart. You can only have a happy bonding with your lil friend, if he/she is happy living with you. Always call out to the pet stores and take an appointment for pet counseling. This will give you a better insight about the choices that you have to make. Observe your pets for a long period of time and try to understand their desires and wants. In case, you are buying your new chirpy friend based on the decision by a little kid, remember that it’s based on sight and emotion. This will be risky in future and can be heartbreaking at times! To avoid such complexities, pre-select the pet birds that you know will suit your environment and situation. You can then forward the chosen options to the kids and let them decide the pet they want to adopt.

Once your pet bird is home, make sure they are comfortable and their needs attended. Make appointments with the veterinary and even go for bird DNA sexing process if you wish to have a bigger family for your pet! Birds bring joy and happiness in family and surely they are the best alarm for daily purpose!
